Classes at SMA

Every student at Sheffield Music Academy receives individual support and a tailored timetable, choosing from a number of core and optional classes.


Core Classes

Instrumental lesson – 30, 45 or 60 minutes (if required)
Specialist class in first study instrument
Small class 1 (Aural, theory, or musicianship)
Small class 2 (Aural, theory, or composition)


Optional Classes

These include World Music, Popular Music, Composition and chamber groups.


Instrumental Tuition

Sheffield Music Academy provides specialist one-to-one instrumental tuition of 30, 45 or 60 minutes from a team of highly skilled tutors on the following instruments:

Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass
Wind – bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone, recorder
Brass – cornet, french horn, trombone, trumpet
Percussion – drums, percussion, keyboard, piano
Guitar – classical, electric and bass
Voice – classical, jazz, opera, popular


Performance Opportunities

Lunchtime concerts – Every Saturday students have the opportunity to perform in the lunchtime concert held in the Heeley Hall at 1.00pm

Evening concerts – Sheffield Music Academy has a busy concert schedule with a number of fantastic venues throughout the year

Internal workshops – Held at various points throughout the year from specialist masterclasses to intense ensemble training, welcoming visiting experts and practitioners.

External workshops – Students benefit from the Academy’s close partnership with various music organisations in Sheffield and the surrounding area
